First Glimmer of Hope

Most of you are familiar with “The Starfish Story.” It is a wonderful short story and illustration if taken to heart can have a dramatic effect in ones life and those around us.

The Starfish Story (adapted from The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley (1907 – 1977))

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”

“I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, “It made a difference for that one.”

(This story has appeared all over the web in various forms, usually with no credit given to Mr. Eiseley. Sometimes it is a little girl throwing the starfish into the ocean, sometimes a young man, once even an elderly Indian. Some forms have the old man join in throwing back the starfish with others on the beach joining in. Its a wonderful illustration of a powerful truth that pushes back the hopelessness that crowds in on us.)

I (Gary Amirault), get a lot of emails, letters and phone calls from around the world. There are many starfish in the seas and shores of humanity. There are billions of fellow human beings who need hope. Below is a sampling of emails I received just today:

First one: “I counseled a lady today who’s son committed suicide. Her brother had an argument with her and told her that her son is burning in hell. Oh my goodness, the Holy Spirit rose up in me and all the salvation for all scriptures poured out of me. Thank you Jesus that you have given me this awesome good news. When we finished our conversation this dear lady had the first glimmer of hope that she has had in a while. Thank you Lord for your love!”

Another one: “Universal reconciliation through the cross of Jesus Christ for all sin for all mankind sounds so so so so so right….and yet Im scared stiff… I have a pit in my stomach… my head hurts… Im afraid… WHAT am I afraid of? I dont know. I just feel fear. Im going to pray to the Lord again about this….”

In both these cases, people are being torn apart with fear, fear of Hell. And it is not usually the “street sinners” who are spreading this fear terrorizing people, it is not gang members,  it is religious folks, those who believe they are living a godly and holy life, who have a “fear of the Lord” that are producing this fear that is tormenting so many people on earth. It is pastors, elders, deacons, Sunday School teacher, child evangelism, Vacation Bible School teachers, Christian authors and publishers, seminary professors and those they influence who are spreading this godless hopeless fear. “Perfect Love casts out fear.”

Those of you who know this glorious message of Hope, the Victorious Gospel of Jesus Christ, as I have called it for years, you know the peace this message can bring. Whenever you send us a donation that allows us keep producing more videos, articles, books, Bible software, web pages, you are giving life to another starfish. We get pleas for help with Bible questions every day from the many pages we have put on the internet. When I got these two emails we also received a paypal donation from another person. I thank all of you who come along and join us in giving hope to the hopeless.

Dear Gary, I want to thankyou for your wonderful teachings. I have read alot of your materials, and seen many of your videos online, and I’m very happy to see ABBA Father confirming to me the truth of the “True Gospel”; through your studies and teachings. Keep up the fine work.
Question?, where may I find a community of believers that believe Yahshua will save “ALL” and that don’t believe in “Hell”? I would love to fellowship with others on these things, but so far I’m alone in this truth; in this area for now. I know God wants to use me, but I need further instruction. Can you help suggest a congregation or home based body? I live in the N.W. in Vancouver Washington.
The blessings of Yahshua be yours brother. Shalom Shalom! :o)
